Stones and similar debris in raw sesame seeds generally originate from three sources: grit and soil clods picked up during field harvesting; sand particles introduced during sun-drying or threshing/processing operations; and metal fragments or other foreign objects that find their way in during transport and storage. Failure to remove these heavy impurities poses three major risks: first, they can enter downstream equipment—such as milling, pressing, or packaging machinery—causing mechanical wear or even severe damage; second, if they end up in the final product, they create a hazard that could crack a consumer’s tooth, directly violating critical food safety standards; and third, in the context of export trade, excessive stone or grit content can lead to the rejection of an entire shipment or forced price reductions. Consequently, a destoner is not merely an optional add-on for a sesame cleaning line; it is an essential piece of equipment, vital for ensuring product safety and achieving the highest possible level of purity.
II. Working Principle of the Destoner
The working principle of a destoner (specifically, a gravity-based destoner) is founded on the precise coupling of three physical processes: fluidization via airflow, vibration of the screen surface, and transport along an inclined plane. All three are essential.
First, fluidization via airflow. As material enters the screen surface uniformly from the feed inlet, a fan forces air upward through the screen—which is perforated with small holes or fitted with overlapping, scale-like slats—creating a consistent, rising airflow. This airflow loosens and lifts the sesame seeds, bringing the entire material bed into a "fluidized," suspended state. In this state, the particles transition from a tightly packed arrangement to a loose, suspended layer where individual particles can move relative to one another. Fluidization is crucial because it allows particles of varying specific gravities to settle or rise freely based on their own weight, setting the stage for subsequent stratification. If the airflow is too weak, the material bed will not loosen sufficiently, leading to inadequate separation; if the airflow is too strong, the sesame seeds may be blown away entirely. Consequently, airflow volume is the most critical parameter for a destoner and must be precisely calibrated according to the weight of the sesame seeds.
Second, stratification by specific gravity. Within this fluidized state, particles naturally stratify according to their specific gravity. Heavier items—such as stones, sand, clods of soil, or metal fragments—possess greater weight and a stronger downward force; they sink through the suspended layer of sesame seeds to reach the bottom, coming into direct contact with the screen surface. Conversely, the lighter, plump sesame seeds are supported by the airflow and remain in the upper portion of the material bed. This results in a "heavy-at-the-bottom, light-at-the-top" stratification, effectively separating the stones from the sesame seeds in the vertical dimension.

Third, screen vibration and inclined transport. Driven by an eccentric mechanism (such as an eccentric shaft or a vibrating motor), the screen body undergoes reciprocating vibration. Simultaneously, the screen surface itself is set at a specific incline—typically ranging from a few degrees to over a dozen degrees. The combined effect of vibration and inclination causes stones (which settle at the bottom) and sesame seeds (which remain in the upper layer) to move in opposite directions:
- Stones, resting directly on the screen surface, are propelled "uphill" along the inclined plane by the frictional force generated by the vibration, eventually being discharged through an outlet at the high end.
- Sesame seeds, floating in the upper layer with minimal contact with the screen surface, move "downhill" along the incline—driven by both vibration and airflow—and are discharged through an outlet at the low end.
The core principle here is that stones, being in direct contact with the screen and subject to greater vibrational thrust, are conveyed upward, while sesame seeds, suspended within the material layer and having weak contact with the screen, flow downward. This allows the two materials to be discharged in opposite directions, achieving precise separation. The screen surface is typically constructed from "fish-scale" plates or perforated stainless steel; the "barb-like" structure of the fish-scale plates enhances the upward grip on the stones, further improving the accuracy of the destoning process.
There are four key operational parameters: airflow (which determines the degree of fluidization and stratification), amplitude and frequency (which dictate conveying speed and stratification efficiency), the inclination angle of the screen (which influences separation precision and flow direction), and the feed rate (which determines the thickness of the material layer). The specific requirements for processing sesame seeds include: using a precisely calibrated, low-intensity airflow—strong enough to loosen the sesame seeds without displacing the stones; maintaining a relatively small amplitude to prevent the sesame seeds from bouncing excessively and scattering; and fine-tuning the inclination angle to ensure that the stones and sesame seeds do not mix. These four parameters must be configured in coordination; an improper setting for any one of them can result in incomplete stone removal or the loss of sesame seeds along with the stones.

III. Specific Advantages of the Destoner
First, it specializes in removing heavy impurities of similar size, enhancing both safety and purity. This is the core, irreplaceable value of a destoner. Stones, sand, and metal fragments—which cannot be removed by air-screen cleaners—are efficiently separated by the destoner. This fundamentally eliminates risks such as tooth damage (from biting into stones) and equipment wear, pushing the purity level of sesame seeds to over 99.5% and meeting both food-grade and export-grade standards. This is particularly critical for raw materials sourced from regions with high stone content, such as Pakistan and Uzbekistan.
Second, it functions as a quality grader, elevating the product’s commercial grade. While removing stones, the destoner also separates plump sesame seeds from shriveled, broken, or immature grains based on specific gravity. This ensures greater uniformity in terms of plumpness, bulk density, and color. Plump seeds, having a higher specific gravity, move toward the main product outlet, while lighter, shriveled grains are carried away by the airflow to the light-impurity outlet. A single pass achieves both destoning and purification, directly boosting the product's market appeal and export value.
Third, it reduces the load on downstream equipment and improves the efficiency of the entire processing line. Once processed by the destoner, the sesame seeds are highly purified. This allows optical sorters to identify discolored particles more accurately and trigger air-jet ejectors with greater precision, thereby enhancing both the efficiency and accuracy of the color-sorting process. It also ensures more stable weighing during the packaging stage. The overall production capacity, product purity, and consistency are improved, while operational costs are effectively reduced.
The destoner from Hebei Taobo Machinery features a design characterized by stable airflow, precise vibration amplitude, and a wear-resistant screen surface. It allows for fine-tuned parameter adjustments tailored to the small size and low specific gravity of sesame seeds. When integrated with air-screen cleaners, grading screens, and optical sorters, it forms a comprehensive sesame cleaning line capable of consistently achieving a purity level of over 99.5%—a reliable, end-to-end solution for sesame processing and export enterprises.

2026 gravity separator utilizes differences in material specific gravity to perform sorting. It is specifically designed to remove impurities and inferior-quality grains that are similar in size to the target seeds—particles that are otherwise difficult to separate using conventional air-screen or vibrating-screen cleaners. It serves as a core piece of precision-sorting equipment in processing lines for grains, sesame seeds, and legumes.

Pakistan is a significant global producer and exporter of sesame seeds, ranking as one of the few oilseed crops for which the country maintains a net export position. According to data from Pakistan’s Ministry of National Food Security and Research, the area under sesame cultivation expanded substantially from approximately 259,900 hectares in the 2022/23 crop year to about 399,800 hectares in 2023/24—an increase of 53%. Production reached approximately 301,200 tonnes, a sharp year-on-year rise of 97.7%. For the 2024/25 crop year, production is projected to climb further to approximately 440,000 tonnes (a 44.7% year-on-year increase), with the harvested area—as recorded by FAOSTAT—exceeding 700,000 hectares. The primary production regions are concentrated in Punjab province (cultivated during the *Kharif* monsoon season, covering approximately 1.76 million acres in 2024) and parts of Sindh province. In recent years, technical cooperation between Pakistan and China, alongside the adoption of contract farming, has led to significant improvements in both crop yields and the level of commercialization.
