Uzbekistan is a significant global producer and exporter of mung beans—locally known as "mash." As one of the country’s most export-competitive pulse crops, mung beans are primarily cultivated within the irrigated agricultural zones of Central Asia’s arid and semi-arid regions. Production is concentrated in the southern and central provinces, including Samarkand, Bukhara, Kashkadarya, and Surkhandarya. Farmers frequently employ a "winter wheat–summer mung bean" crop rotation, leveraging irrigation alongside a hot, dry climate to achieve high yields. According to industry research, mung bean production in Uzbekistan has shown consistent year-on-year growth; output reached approximately 150,000–160,000 tonnes in the 2023/24 season and is projected to rise to 180,000–200,000 tonnes for the 2024/25 season. In certain years, total national production can reach as high as 360,000 tonnes, a substantial portion of which is destined for export.
