I. Bucket Elevator and Storage Silo — The "Starting Hub" of the Entire Line

The first stage of the cleaning line involves feeding and buffering. A bucket elevator—configured in either a Z-shape or a vertical layout—uses a series of buckets to continuously transport bulk sesame seeds from ground level or an unloading point to an elevated storage silo. Beyond simply "lifting" the material, it serves as a prerequisite for stable production across the entire line: by using a variable-frequency drive (VFD) to control the lifting speed, it ensures a consistent and uniform flow of material to downstream equipment, preventing surges or shortages that could otherwise cause blockages or idle running. The storage silo acts as a buffer and temporary holding unit, smoothing out the feed rate while providing access points for sampling and batch switching, thereby ensuring a steady input for continuous production.

II. Air Screen Cleaner — The Core Workhorse of the Entire Line

The air screen cleaner is the undisputed heart of the Nigerian sesame cleaning line. It integrates two fundamental physical separation principles:

Air-based removal of light impurities. Nigerian sesame often contains a high proportion of shriveled seeds, empty husks, plant debris, and light dust—impurities with a specific gravity similar to that of the sesame seeds themselves, making them impossible to separate using screens alone. The air-screen cleaner utilizes an adjustable fan to generate an upward airflow. By leveraging differences in aerodynamic properties, it blows away light impurities like shriveled seeds, dust, and weed seeds. It is also equipped with a settling/recovery mechanism that captures any sound seeds inadvertently carried off by the airflow, preventing the loss of good product.

Screen-based removal of oversized and undersized impurities. Larger contaminants—such as clods of soil, straw, cowpeas, or sorghum fragments—as well as fine impurities like sand and dust, are separated based on particle size. The machine employs a multi-layer screen configuration: coarse screens trap large debris, while fine screens sift out sand and dust. The screen apertures can be flexibly swapped based on the specific batch of raw material, allowing for "customized screening." Since white sesame and brown sesame differ in grain size and impurity composition, the screen configuration can be adjusted accordingly, offering excellent adaptability. Multiple closed-loop stages ensure consistent purity. The equipment employs a composite configuration—combining air separation, screening, and a secondary air separation process—to achieve a stable purity level of over 99.5% through multiple rounds of primary and refined sorting. This meets the acceptance standards for food-grade sesame destined for export. Features such as adjustable airflow, interchangeable screens, and variable feed rates allow operators to make rapid adjustments for different batches, serving as the critical stage for ensuring the entire production line yields qualified, high-quality products.

III. Gravity Separator

A gravity separator classifies grains based on their specific gravity, distinguishing between high-quality and defective kernels.

It is primarily used for quality grading within a single batch of material—separating plump, heavy kernels from shriveled, insect-damaged, moldy, sprouted, or broken grains. For instance, when processing sesame seeds, it can sort them into premium, plump seeds, secondary-grade seeds, and a mixture of shriveled, moldy, or foreign matter. In the context of seed production, it is used to improve germination rates and the thousand-kernel weight.

Equipped with multiple discharge outlets (for finished products, intermediate mixed fractions, and light/defective materials), a longer processing deck, and more distinct airflow zones, this machine is ideal for precision processing and value enhancement. It is frequently employed in the final refinement stages for food-grade sesame seeds and sesame seeds intended for planting.

IV. Destoner

A major challenge with sesame seeds from Nigeria is the presence of sand, stones, and soil particles. While these contaminants differ significantly from sesame seeds in terms of specific gravity, their similar particle size makes them difficult to remove using conventional screens. The gravity-based destoner is the essential solution for this problem: by leveraging aerodynamics and differences in specific gravity—combined with deck vibration and controlled airflow—it causes the lighter sesame seeds to remain suspended in the upper layer and flow toward the outlet, while the heavier sand, stones, and soil particles sink to the bottom and are discharged separately. This allows for precise separation even when the contaminants are similar in size to the sesame seeds, effectively turning the difficult task of "finding stones among sesame seeds" into an automated process where stones are collected in a separate pile. For raw materials with high sand and stone content—common in shipments from Nigeria—a destoner is a critical step for meeting ash content standards and increasing the value of the product.

V. Grading machine / Color Sorter — Final Refinement and Quality Upgrading

In export trade, product grading is just as critical as visual appeal in determining price. A vibratory grading screen sorts cleaned sesame seeds by size—categorizing them into large, medium, and small grains—to meet the specific size requirements of different clients. For those seeking to further enhance color uniformity and remove discolored or moldy seeds, a color sorter can be integrated; it utilizes high-speed optoelectronic recognition to identify and eject off-colored or moldy grains, ensuring the sesame meets high-purity, food-grade standards. While not strictly mandatory, these machines are essential tools for exporters targeting premium markets—such as Japan or the Middle East—where superior quality commands a higher price.
